RVDS - Moods and Dances 2021

Label: Bureau B
Format: CD
Flawed but promising electronica on new album from Hamburg-based DJ RVDS

Review

Those lovely folk at Bureau B have been at it again. In the midst of their extensive roster is RVDS, a resident DJ at the Golden Pudel club in Hamburg since 2005. Simply translated RVDS is Richard von der Schulenburg. Also known as Riccardi Schola, he has been producing and DJing house, ambient and techno of some repute. Most of the tracks on here are named after the instrument that has made it in some way. Bureau B have a knack of conjuring up electronica artists for the fun of it, and this proves no exception. Drawing upon sounds similar to the mighty Kraftwerk, this offering has its own stamp on it. Each track has its own theme too. ‘Roland’s Night Walk’ is just that, a track that drifts through a forest walk accompanied by a Roland keyboard. All mostly instrumentals, the nine tracks on here are in the same vein. At over six minutes long, ‘Dance of the Space Pentax’ doesn’t really kick in until its final third. All tracks are written and produced by RVDS, and the whole affair was mastered by Gavin Weiss. I was, however, expecting a little more in some way. I think I was expecting a little more uptempo tuneage which this is not. It tends to meander rather than maraud. Don’t get me wrong! Tt’s a fine piece of electronica. It just fell a little flat for me is all. It will, however, make me wait in anticipation to the next instalment, which has to be good.
