Both audience and artists knew how truly exceptional this night was, which was evident in the sparking energy in the house. This was a twenty-fifth anniversary celebration of Kruder & Dorfmeister’s K&D Sessions live release, uniquely performed with a live band. As you might imagine, it was something very different for touring DJs. It was a night of downtempos and deep-groove; a stroll through the soundtrack of our youth. Certified for a million worldwide sales, this music is an endeared imprint for many. No small feat given the absence of any mainstream radio airplay. Downstage was filled with decorative sunflowers: a sun-drenched pre-golden hour of sunset. It was in keeping with the packaging artwork from the recent re-release. The dynamic lights and the chill vibe was an immersive experience. Vienna-based DJs Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister were upstage center and flanked in a semicircle with their four accompanying musicians: drummer Andreas Lettner, bassist Peter Schoenbauer, keyboardist Albin Janoska and percussionist Maximilian Kanzler. The re-creation of electronia mixes with musicians live was a one-off experience and a curiosity as to how it would be presented. Both DJs joined the action by playing guitar. Also Dorfmeister played the flute for a few songs: one number, Kruder helped the rhythm by banging a drumstick while working his electronic wizardry. This concert dodged two bullets that could have cancelled it, adding to the night’s providence. Fans learned from their Instragam feed during the afternoon of the concert that gear was stolen from their tour truck. It was quickly retrieved and the culprits apprehended thanks to the forethought of a crew member. Apple airtags on all valuables saved the day. Within the following 24 hours, Barcelona was affected by that nationwide power outage, which furthered the ephemeral nature of live music and the one-of-a-kind experience.
