intro
Impressive ninth album from German electronic composer Hans-Joachim Roedelius in his 'Selbstportrait' which he has recorded using his original vintage instruments and equipment
In checking out all his moves, the more I believe that Hans-Joachim Roedelius must be quite a chess-player. He jumps around like the knight in his patterns and paths of composition. Roedelius on the sleeve notes reflects about the instruments he used to record the album. The suggestion came from Roedelius' current label Bureau B in Hamburg to record a new 'Selbstportrait' using his original vintage instruments and equipment. It's Hans-Joachim Roedelius on Farfisa, Hans-Joachim Roedelius on Fender Rhodes, Hans-Joachim Roedelius on Roland, Hans-Joachim Roedelius on Kong, Hans-Joachim Roedelius on Boss with Hans-Joachim Roedelius on Echolette Solid State Panorama Mixer. This one-man Big Band only received helping hands from producer Onnen Bock and engineer Wolf Rod Bock. It is perhaps a masterpiece, but is too early to tell, even now. The fact remains, 'Wahre Liebe' won't let you drift off. His craft can be described as minimalism, serialism, modern composing and also has personal associations for me with 'Händel' and Satie. 'Wahre Liebe' sounds crisp and crystal clear and oozes with warm compositions like the opening track 'A Play in the Wind'. Gentle and exquisite keyboards once more define the sound. 'True Love'. 'Gerne', 'Vormals' and 'Gleichklang' together build to make a mind-expanding symphony. Today based in Switzerland, Rodeelius seems to pick up humorous Swiss. Titles such as 'Mitgewalzert' and 'Im Kreisel' at least made me reminisce about the country where another genius resides, Lee Perry. And the excellent wines the country does not export. Roedelius evidently enjoyed his label's idea. 'Wahre Liebe' is a great treat. I dare not think of remixes using upgrades of the equipment ... 'Wahre Liebe' is one of those rare albums which you can enjoy in the background and over the headphones at full volume.
