intro
Fiery debut mini-album from Paris-based surf punk trio the Bad Pelicans which proves to be the missing link between the Cramps and Spizz Energi
Alas, New Rose Records closed their Paris-based office long ago but the Bad Pelicans would have belonged to that label. Thanks heavens for Stolen Body in dear old Bristol who have released this collection comprising of songs which the Bad Pelicans sold on cassette at gigs around their native Paris. 'Best of the Bad Pelicans' is their first claim to fame. They skate, surf and eat take-away pizzas lying flat on the couch whilst listening to Metal Urbain, Plastic Bertrand and similar acts from the times before Instagram drone videos stole the skate and surf scene. 'Best Of' is an eight-track crammed with buzzing impact. Their surf twang and sleazy fuzz, such as on the rumbling 'Surf Your Coffin', sounds truly excellent. I'm still undecided whether it's a best of eight vinyl singles or the A and B-sides of four 45s which never saw the light of day. Each one is a hammering tune or anthem. 'Best o' is a smashing compilation making one very, very hungry for more. More of the same perhaps, as the Bad Pelicans in effect follow in the footsteps of their references with such overwhelming ease. They sing ooh-ooh Plastic Bertrand choruses over gritty Cramps garage grooves and implement Spizz Energi riffs without effort. The Bad Pelicans skate over several styles, yet find and dig up what must be their own blend and brand. Surf punk in 2018 sounds as good as it did almost forty years ago. Whoopee!
