intro
Hit and miss album from FFS, a collaboration between Franz Ferdinand and Sparks
FFS is not exactly abbreviated from For Fuck's Sake yet rather from Franz Ferdinand Sparks. They are a supergroup of some sorts; under the guise of three alphabet letters, which culminates in lads down the pub backing the wacky genius brother duo from California. The album's highlight is 'Collaborations Don't Work', and this song title so very honestly portrays the truth for me. In my opinion, and do forgive me for writing so, I have always held Franz Ferdinand to be a next generation band of irrelevant teenyboppers, like the Bay City Rollers of Britpop. To see them embraced by Sparks gave me a bad cough. The Californians seem to have swapped Giorgio Moroder's mean disco machine for Franz Ferdinand, but, to be fair, Franz Ferdinand perform quite well, until that is their singer Alex Kapranos is given the opportunity to sing that is. In spite of ultimate Franz Ferdinand unwisdom, 'Police Encounters' though marks another gem, bearing all the Sparks' trademarks. Only now though, the two singers have become a duo. This a moment that should not to be returned to until sarcasm takes the upper hand. On 'Piss Off' they sound united in disdain. 'So Many Bridges' (To Jump Off ) follows in neat fashion yet it's as if the sluggish pub loud mouth has shut up the smart-witted gentleman. The dreary double F-word repetition unfortunately wins out against a few sparks of genius. Likely to be too smart for FF-fans. Enough Sparks though.
