intro
Gothic London doomsters Cold in Berlin find themselves at the forefront of a genre they appear to be cultivating themselves
Right, let's get the negatives out of the way first. Maya’s vocals are too high in the mix on the penultimate track ‘Ghosts’ and...er...that’s about it. Everything else on this record impresses the hell out of me, from the tone of the guitars to the spaced out and oddly trippy moments in songs such as ‘Dopamine’ that avoid that psychedelic guitar band trick of plunging the treasure chest of the classic rock playbook. They instead liberally pilfer from the tradition of scathing goth rock such as Siouxsie and the Banshees and Bauhaus. Where this London based quartet differ from the rest of the blackened pack though is with the sheer power in those beautifully toned guitars. It’s as if Cold in Berlin have taken the best bits of doom metal, chiselled off the fat and crafted the resulting riffs into just about some of the most crushing and catchy choruses I have heard this year. And whilst the majestically bludgeoning ‘Pray For Us’ may get a tad bogged down in Sisters Of Mercy worship there is no denying that album closer ‘Natural Order’ should be a real breakthrough track for them. Given the right exposure Cold in Berlin could find themselves being massive, leaders of a new goth world order. Heaven help us.
