intro
Catchy second album from Brooklyn-based trio Hospitality, which fuses indie pop with psychedelia and post-punk
So, it is into the New Year we go and a whole plethora of good music to listen to, beginning with this little charmer from Brooklyn indie-pop trio Hospitality, which follows up their 2012 self-titled album. Amber Papini (vocals, guitar and keyboards) , Nathan Michel (drums, guitar and keyboards) and Brian Betancourt ( bass, keyboards and backing vocals) will be looking to build on the debut with this second album ‘Trouble’, which has come out on Merge Records. This is one of those albums that make you smile as soon as you hear the first few bars. In this case, the guitar-ridden opener ‘Nightingale’ flits from heavy drum and guitar to stripped back simplicity and just echoing vocals in a matter of seconds. Hospitality describe themselves as an indie pop act, but ‘Trouble’ has got other depths too and has some fine psychedelic touches floating around it. There are ten tracks on here that, by the time you have got to the last, you will want to bang them on again. Such is their catchiness. ‘Going Out’ is a steady foot-tapper with Bjork-like pantings littered throughout from Amber and some fine guitar work. In general, ‘Trouble’ is a great deal darker and also indulges in more prog than their debut. But they still retain a pop standard mixing it in with a tad of post punk to add as well to the interest. One of the main highlights is the Kasabian-styled start to ‘Last Word’. In fact, the whole track is a belter. Lyrically on the dark side it chugs along well, and wouldn't go a miss on the local radio stations hit list. ’I Miss You Bones’ is another to savour on a great-sounding sophomore outing that should feature highly as the year progresses.
