intro

Fiery combination of straight-up rock and stoner anthems on fine fourth album from Californian trio, Sasquatch

Some bands manage to name themselves perfectly, and Sasquatch are one such group. They make big hairy man music, for big hairy men to enjoy, with big hairy riffs Sure, they’re billed as a stoner rock act but there is a little more to the LA-based trio than that. There is a real sense of ‘Americaness’ about their sound. I don’t mean sugary-surface Hollywood America. I mean the real America of vast landscapes, cowboys, lumberjack dudes drinking cold beer, wearing flannel shirts and working hard – the sort of thing that Bruce Springsteen also sings about. It is, therefore, not at all surprising that Sasquatch’s music has featured on several U.S. TV shows including ‘Dog the Bounty Hunter’ and ‘Sons of Anarchy’. There is a great blend of straight-up rock music and the stoner edge to their sound, not quite as complex as the likes of Electric Wizard but heftier than Queens of the Stone Age. There’s a healthy mix of heavier tunes like ‘Drawing Flies’ and ‘Sweet Lady,’ alongside more quick and to the point moments such as ‘The Message’ and the brilliant ‘Wolves At My Door’. These tunes all fit together as a complete body of work, and the variation serves as vehicle to keep things fresh rather than trundling along in one direction throughout the album. Singer/guitarist Keith Gibbs has a definite Chris Cornell vibe to his voice but without all the flamboyance, and is backed by Jason Casanova on bass guitar and Rick Ferrante on drums who together provide a water tight rhythm section. The three really have their sound perfected. There’s a slight edge toward the more commercial side of all things rock and roll, but this in no way means that ‘IV’ is the sound of a band chasing airplay by any means. They have cut the fat and left in only what matters, and then turned the volume right up. Fans of Red Fang, early Soundgarden and Corrosion of Conformity will all enjoy Sasquatch.
