intro
Predictable and cliched Americana on fourth album from Athen, Georgia-basd one-time alternative rockers, the Whigs
Quasi-hallelujah rock hipster trio the Whigs encounter the ghosts of American rock on 'Enjoy the Company', their fourth album. It is music to put on your jeans to and get on the road, but, however, a clever pastiche of clichés. 'Enjoy the Company' probably sounds great in a traffic jam. Singer Parker Gispert is remarkably clear and coherent, considering the oily, bluesy rock music on this album. His competent cohorts Julian Dorio and Timothy Deaux produce some great noise on 'Staying Alive', the eight-minute opening track but the next song, 'Gospel', is a travesty and predictability gets the upper hand. Pumping basslines with oh-oh's and ah-ah's like dogs begging for food do the trick. Not forgetting the riffs from 40 years of great American rawk. Artistically 'Enjoy The Company' is completely irrelevant. But when you like to dwell in loud Americana, and when there's still room in your record collection between the Blasters, Smashing Pumpkins and ZZ Top, the Whigs probably don;t seem too bad. This is, however, very safe rock radio music, the most hilarious example being the forced 'Rock And Roll Forever'. Most likely The Whigs were reborn and got on a mission too dull for an entire album.
