intro
Upbeat and satisfying third album from British singer-songwriter and electro artist, Lettie
Lettie takes fragments, hopes, dreams and candid observations, and with her crisp articulation and perfect-for-pop voice that harbours a healthy hint of vibrato, this British singer-songwriter truly entertains. Her new album, 'Good Fortune, Bad Weather', is wildly musical. With ‘Swirl’ she sets forth on the joyous journey. The opener is unadulterated pop. In ‘Lucky’, she sings about her current state: “I’m so tired of being broke.” But then with soaring harmonies, she admits she’s lucky. ‘Bitter’ is more pop-noir; plunging a little deeper into her self-actualization. The poppified lyrics are never better than in ‘Never Want to Be Alone’: “I want to go to Spain/Eat the oranges/Feel the pain.” Industrial beats and boisterous bleeps make this rather simple song highly contagious. Lettie is suddenly all about rebellion when singing ‘Sanctuary’. ‘Digital’ is particularly innovative. D. James Goodwin’s mix screams with intensity. ‘Pandora’ is probably the most mainstream and the one most memorable, while ‘Mister Lighter’ is divine – set against an avalanche of strings by Rebecca Schlappich. ‘Aluminum Man’ features the killer synth of David Baron, Lettie’s co-writer. ‘Good Fortune, Bad Weather’ is cleverly spiked with reggae. ‘Crash and Burn’ is by far the most sassy. Lettie goes beyond pop in this project. Her decade-long experience with several bands, and international touring has made her an incredibly versatile artist. And, when she and Baron met up in 2006, her first two albums, which were recorded in the US, sealed her destiny. On this album, Danny Blume, Zachary Alford and Sara Lee, D. and James Goodwin lend vital instrumental support, making this third effort incredibly rich and satisfying.
