intro
Stunningly effective first album in nearly twenty five years from Pyrolater, the project of pioneering German electronic dance genius, Kurt Dahlke
Pronounced as Purolator; in the German language the lettre Y is pronounced as the in ancient Greek upsilon, Pyrolator runs the Ata Tak label. As a musician he is better known for writing 'Ein Jahr (Es Geht Voran)' perhaps not so incidently used in a popular TV-movie just a week ago or so, than for the wacky and quirky genius of Pyrolator and other acts on his label. Heavy rotation on the John Peel shows gave the Atatak label recognition outside Germany, even when the surrealist wit and laconic observations must have gone over many. Neue Welle the genre was named and ranged from the white punkfunk of Fehlfarben to the dadaist lounge of Lost Gringos. Pyrolator's style extended to graphics for the sleeve and Der Plan wrote the score for the film 'Die Letzte Rache', commissioned by Das Kleine Fernsehspiel (ZDF TV). Pyrolator stood at the cradle of Der Plan and D.A.F. Also known as Kurt Dahlke he has designed software as well. 'Neuland', possibly a nod to the influential works of Neu!, is not as frivolous compared to his albums from the 1980s. Tarnished by nowaday dance music styles, the hand of the composer is a bit tougher to detect. It fearures mid-tempo electronica grooves first, then 'Char' and 'Vostock' bring hard-hitting euphoria and by chance may become dance chart biggies; Pyrolator always had the knack for writing striking tunes. The last half of 'Neuland' has a deeper dimension and breaks some new ground. All in all, 'Neuland' is much more about introspection than exploration. Much like Basic Channel, there's still an edge to the music of Pyrolator. These are well-crafted tracks and stunningly smooth rides. The closing track says it all: 'Irresponsibly Happy'.
