intro

Original-sounding and versatile five band EP from Canadian label, Skanky Panky

This EP is a very mixed bag. There is is no Skanky Panky sound as such yet, but it still perhaps provides an indication of how the label picks some of the best new beats. Skanky Panky fill the void left by the inactivity of Kid606 and his Tigerbeat6 label. The EP brings a mixture of today - buzzy dubstep, grinding glitch and jazzy breaks. Some of the best sounds I have heard this year comes on the last thirty seconds of the opening track from JmeJ on 'The Champion' as, rather than slowly fading dance beats, there is a concise end to this snappy breezeblock slammer, which clocks in at three and a half minutes by the way. K+Lab on 'Talking Smack' uses a Hammond organ riff on a very addictive riddim which comes complete with a funky flute! It's like in-line dancing to Run DMC in a dubstep remix. The Stickybuds don't do much with 'Boh! Riddim' apart from bringing jumpy ragga. The greatly named Son of a Glitch whose accomplished electronica pop on 'Together' gradually, however, develops into a smooth and jazzy groove. Jazz Mags are the last to come on with '108 Track'. There are brooding acid beats first, which change steady yet artful composition. This EP is a highly original set, with excellent examples of the music spectrum of today.
