Young Rebel Set - Young Rebel Set
Label: Young Rebel Set
Format: LP

intro

Exuberant vinyl-only mini album compilation of Stockton-on-Tees-based seven-piece band the Young Rebels Set's first two single and EP releases

Young Rebel Set are quite possibly the hardest working band in Britain as it seems barely a month goes by without them embarking on a tour, either in the UK or Germany. As such it is no surprise that the two singles and one EP they have released so far are now only available at inflated prices on E-bay. In order to satisfy the demand for the above, the group have neatly packaged the 8 songs on a mini vinyl LP for sale, mainly at gigs. Debut single 'If I Was' kicks off side one and builds from a plaintive folk number into a full bloodied track as additional instruments are added throughout. It's a stunning start and already a highlight of the band's live set. The organ led 'Fall Hard' is more middle of the road and probably the weakest track here, but 'Won't Get Up Again', an ode to the joys of drinking, is a return to the band's sound, mixing the best elements of the Coral, the Libertines, the Pogues and even the Wonderstuff to great effect. 'Bagatelle' closes side one and is a sombre and atmospheric tale of loss, showcasing the quieter aspect of the band quite beautifully. Side two is even better, with arguably the greatest lost single of 2009, 'Walk On', the pick. It's real anthemic stuff and the kind of instant pop song that sets up base camp in your brain and never bothers to leave. The infectious swinging 'Rosie; and the upbeat 'Borders' aren't far behind either, despite being mere b-sides. Final track, 'Billy Died', is another slow song that the likes of troubadour Liam Frost would be proud of. Roll on the debut album proper, because based on this collection it will be very special indeed.
