Band Ane - Anish Music Too and Free
Label: Jenka Records
Format: CD X2

intro

Flawed, but intriguing double CD of electronica from eccentric Danish musician Band Ane

This double CD set comprises Band Ane's albi 2 and 3, 'Too and Free' to the non-English speaking population, and showcases Ane's development from making fragile electronica into accomplished composition. She starts with the resonance from oldskool folktronica, yet new tools have provided her with such greater possibilities, so much so that 'Too' soon begins to sound very lush and well-crafted. The titles to the tracks are all in Danish and all refer to domestic matters, digital as well as philosophical, and serve as witness to her obstinate charm. Ane's story-telling touches on everyday life in the technological age and the whimsical, naive and humane aspect she adds to her computer-generated drone music sets her apart. Ane stays shy of producing genuine dance music. All of the same though, she has dragged in beat patterns and dared to get funky. Even at this stage, Ane restricts herself to the use of samples in 'Dansk' yet the joy of life coming from these snippets is very apparent. I'm not entirely sure but it appears as if she has simply asked in family members and friends to comment on what she just has recorded, or was about to do so. The recorded comments function like re-adjustments to Ane's oddball electronica, mocking her intrinsic aspiratations. 'Too' works very much like an equation to her debut, as it is on disc two, 'Free', that she finally lets out the beast. 'Hvis Du Ville' is built around a digitalised woodhorn sample that ultimately became a warning sign, waning along the shore just as the tooting persisted to no avail and as the sound went under. The next track, 'ILD', incorporates both heft and mystery as if it came to the rescue. At this point 'Free' retains its disturbing quality as a combination of challenge and charge. 'Forord' captures almost what Ane would write as the theme music to a TV detective series such as 'Tatort'. Several folktronica heads have already sold their souls to TV stations. The likes of Ane are hard to rank and file as a matter of fact, leaving producers for crime, children and family series puzzled into placing bids on the very same composer at the very same time. Once more, 'Florabi' captures the sunny side and splashes into dub electronics. Ane is gifted by the grace of a cinematic god. The flaws notwithstanding, this 2CD set just might get you a glimpse.
