intro
Distorted indie pop on second EP from Connecticut-based group Singing Bridges, which, while sometimes formulaic, also has strong moments
Connecticut-based label Skipping Stones has released many great records over the past few years, and most of them have moved in the twee department of the indiepop supermarket. But here’s an exception, even though I’m not sure it really is an exception, as many twee bands really enjoyed playing with their distortion pedals too. Singing Bridges are a trio consisting of Christine, Tim and William (Christine and William being the managers of the aforementioned label), and this is their second release. In the promo sheet, they mention Sonic Youth and The Wedding Present among others, and the opening track ('Bee') and the closing track ('Disappear') is not far away from the former of the those two bands. On the three songs in between, they mostly sound like a classic twee pop band, especially on 'Crazy Street'. I have been listening to this 5-track EP for more than a month now, and I still can’t decide on what I think of it. One part of me thinks that this is a good little EP with some strong songs on it, and the other half thinks that I have heard this a million times before, and that I really can’t be bothered. It looks like it will be a tie between these two sides. So, buy the EP and make up your own mind!
