intro
Frantic-sounding avant-garde compilation and concept album, which collects together recordings from experimental musicians from Scandinavia, Holland, Japan and the USA
SST was the cutting edge label in the mid 1980s that released the first Blasting Concept album. Oslo's Smalltown Superjazzz has now sought out new ways to follow the same concept. Nordic freeform jazz and art rock music from a host of musicians are collected on this frantic album. Contributions come from Scandinavia, Holland, Japan and the USA. The binding factor is a certain rage and a strive to play and perform. Almost each track builds up towards a climax, as required by the concept, so you'll hear clattering clarinets and beastly basses heading for a big bang. Fairly traditional by sound, it's the fire in the performances that keeps this concept afloat. The freshest contribution is the last from Diskaholics Anonymous Trio 'Three Collectors Of Bird Note' with a minimal pattern which proves that avant-garde can be funny when sounds starts to resemble animals, though I am sure that pets won't like this album.
