intro

Energetic, but uninspired Buzzcocks-influenced punk on second album from American group, Lovvers

Much better than a sampling machine ever could, this Buzzcocks and Swell Maps cover band bring back memories of late 1970's John Peel years. Their ingenious incorporation of Duane Eddy riffs and Gang Of Four chords fills an entire album that only comes to life in the last track, 'Wild Smiles'. The inspiration is plainly obvious, with Steve Diggle perhaps in line to sue Lovvers for the theft of his guitar riffs. Lovvers try very hard to distinguish themselves from the Arctic Maximo crap yet alas fail to do so. The guitar solo on 'Wild Smiles' is quite memorable. Equally memorable were those bands of the late 1970's though and there's no mention of them. D- for originality, B+ for performance though and yet still much better than the Maximo Arctic Seeds. This American band perhaps just signed the death certificate of retro 1978 Britpop. Get the first Gang of Four, Buzzcocks, Swell Maps and Stiff Little Fingers albums instead of this.
