intro
Excellent new single from much acclaimed London-based trio White Lies, which has an element of Joy Division
White Lies, who were called Fear of Flying beforehand, are the voice of 2009. ‘To Lose My Life’ is the catchiest song since Franz Ferdinand's ‘Take Me Out'. It has its roots in the early 80s, hints at the greatness of Joy Division, and has a vocal from singer and guitarist Harry McVeigh that recalls Julian Cope at his best. It features the perfect lines of “Let's grow old together and die the same time”. To me these lines from the band’s lyricist and bassist, Charles Cave, are the ultimate romantic lyrics of a true wordsmith. The middle 8 recalls the Teardrop Explodes and the whole track is a totally blissful experience. Sadly the Filthy Dukes remix of ‘To Lose My Life’ which appears as the B side is awful and doesn't add anything at all. White Lies’ debut album, which is also called ‘To Lose My Life’, is from start to finish brilliant and will undoubtedly be one of the best albums of the year.
