intro
Surprising, but splendid new single from Primal Scream, the first from their ninth album, 'Beautiful Future'
‘Can’t Go Back’ is the first single from Primal Scream’s ninth album, ‘Beautiful Future’, which is absolutely lovely from start to finish. I never thought I would be saying that either, as they have hardly hinted at any new material at recent live dates. ‘Can't Go Back’ starts off sounding like a rolling steam train until Bobby Gillespie's distorted vocal kicks in. The whole track is rock-based, but squeezes in a pop element which makes it more listenable to non Primals fans. As it heads towards its middle it turns its gears up and heads into Stooges/MC5 territory for its guitar solos. On its B side is ‘Jesus is My Air-o-plane’, a cover of a traditional number and which is a banjo track. When Bobby does decide to sing, it is like a very whiny Bob Dylan. A splendid single all around !
