intro
Variable new album from Bulbul, which merging stoner rock with a techno sound, often comes across as unwantonly funny, but at other times finds the Austrian experimental group breaking musical ground
Noisy outfits such as Bulbul understand DJ tricks much better than DJs understand bands with guitars. There are at least 20 minutes of great excitement on Bulbul's '6'. Also, ich bitte Sie. As for their attempt to blend stoner rock and DJ culture and to reach new limits, Bulbul score points which the likes of T.Raumschmiere were after. Bulbul come from the realms of the Alps bordering Austria and Germany, and a much wider range of sound was there for the catching. The track 'Tighten' sounds like a magnificent piece of noise after several earlier attempts on '6' which either sounded gross and/or unwantonly funny. This album '6' lasts for well over 61 minutes, including 'Das Stuck',the twelve minute sonic, repetitive workout that closes off it and indeed proves a little too long to listen to. Bulbul are brave enough an act to sing some tracks in their native German, and name even three instrumental tracks after city names in China. And truth be known, at a couple of points the concept of stoner rock produced by techno demi-god Patrick Pulsinger worked well. On a few tracks, a sense of alienation through music is put against snippets from Austrian or Bavarian radio dealing with xenophobic call-ins. 'Dust In My Zimmer' is the last slab of bilingual derailed heavy metal music you get on '6'. Have a slice of Sacherspacetorte with this and you'll feel fine.
