intro
Stunning change of direction on new pop folk-influenced single, the first from their new album, for Goldfrapp
Goldfrapp have a track record of changing their sound but never so dramatically as with their new album 'Seventh Tree'. When I heard the first single taken from the album, ‘A&E,’ I didn’t even realise it was Goldfrapp. It’s only Alison Goldfrapp’s distinct and dreamy voice that gives the game away, as this song is folded into folk-y guitar and keyboard notes usually alien to her vocal style. This is by no means a bad thing, however, and I have fallen in love with the band all over again thanks to this spring bud of a single. Fans of the band’s glam rock electro albums may be surprised by the change in direction but Alison has proved her powerful, at times operatic, vocals can fit with any genre, adding a silky sultry feel to a gentle pop folk song.
