Hello and welcome to the November edition of the Pennyblackmusic magazine. One of the things that we have tried to generate as much as possible at Pennyblackmusic over the last few years is our own photography and this month we have given over the bulk of our features section to the work of our photographers. Ben Howarth is there as usual in the features with his Condemned to Rock ‘n’ Roll column, this month writing about the stress of having moved out of his parental home and trying to house his extensive record collection in a small London flat. Otherwise this section is devoted entirely to Photoscapes and music photography. Matt Williams, Pennyblackmusic’s original photographer, is back after a long absence with a photographic feature, for which he has also provided thoughtful and humorous notes, on shoegazing/alt. rock group Lady and the Lost Boys whom he photographed firstly in rehearsal in their singer Annabel Jonees’ family home and then a few weeks later at a show in Shoreditch in London. Katie Anderson has also been busy. There is a feature from her on emo/indie guitar act Fightstar, who she photographed both at a gig in her native Portsmouth and also earlier that day at a record signing at Dress Code, a local boutique. There are also live Photoscapes from her of shows by post hardcore bands Enter Shikari and Emanuel. In our interviews section, our lead interview this month is with ex-Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra. He talks to Denzil Watson about his spoken word solo show which he is about to tour Britain with, Bushism and global capitalism and the demise of his former band. Our other main interviews this month are with ex-Ash guitarist Charlotte Hatherley who has just released her second solo album ‘The Deep Blue Sea’: acid house/country group and one-offs the Alabama 3 who have a new album out ‘M.O.R’, and former Hefner frontman Darren Hayman who has a new solo album out, ‘Darren Hayman and the Secondary Modern’. There are interviews too with hardcore outfit the Dillinger Escape Plan ; indie guitar/metal group Oceansize ; Six Organs of Admittance, the solo project of Comets on Fire guitarist Ben Chasny ; chart toppers and electro act Reverend and the Makers ; Australian singer-songwriter and urban chronicler Perry Keyes and New York synth duo Shy Child. In our live reviews section, there are reviews of shows by Leonard Cohen and Philip Glass, Arcade Fire, Heideroosjes, the Willard Grant Conspiracy, the Animal Collective, Eric’s Trip, Iron and Wine, the Alabama 3, Charlotte Hatherley and Kelman amd Joe Gideon and the Shark. In our profiles section there is a review of a new DVD from the jazz fusion act the Mahavishnu Orchestra,. Our Re :View section, in which our writers look back at albums from the past, features an article from new writer Sara Thomson, who is a Portsmouth-based music fan, on Feeder’s 2001 third album, ‘Echo Park’, while our Website of the Month is Friends of the Heroes, a culture and music webzine.
