intro
Adult-sounding, often very alternative pop on second solo album from ex-Sugababes member, Siobhan Donaghy
Siobhan Donaghy first signed a record contract at the age of 14 as an original member of the Sugababes and sang lead vocals on their debut release. She is now 22 and 'Ghosts' is her second solo album. She recorded it in France with programmer and producer, James Sanger, who has worked with Keane, Eno and U2. It is a fine album of grown up girl-flavoured pop for the Saturday morning pop programme crowd that have now grown up and have got boyfriends of their own, and are no longer teenboppers. 'Don't Give It Up', the first single, is a classy pop number, and has Bjork/Sarah Nixey style beats and lush orchestral backing. 'So You Say' has an acoustic air. It is easy on the ears before eventually perking up a little. It is another good solid pop number. 'There's A Place' has a strong flow to it. Siobhan's vocal is sharp and again it has lush backing. 'Sometimes' has a bigger sound, and is a chart friendly pop number.'12 Bar Acid Blues' is acoustic. It starts off as an elegant Gabrielle style number before upping a gear and becoming more frantic. 'Make It Right' sounds like something Monica Queen of Thrum might have done, It is very gentle and has a tiny bit of soul to it as well. 'Coming Up for Air' is much more dramatic and has a strong flow to it. 'Goldfish' features more Monica Queen-style vocals and starts off beeing quite choral in feel, almost like a pop hymn, before finishing off sounding like a track the Spice Girls might have done. On 'Medevac' Siobhan sounds like Kate Bush at her most commercial. 'Halcyon Days' is a girl pop number with strong guitars and keyboards. 'Ghosts' ends the album and is another other wordly number in the style of Kate Bush again.
