intro

Well-worth investiagting mix of Velvet Underground coolness, new wave dance-ability and no wave noise on new single from New York band Blood on the Wall

‘Mary Susan’ comes wrapped in a distinctly Pixies-esque package – the quiet verse and loud choruses, the tense, trebly guitars and Brad Shanks’ distinctly Frank Black-style yelp. Despite sounding a lot like the Pixies (it’s about two notes away from ‘Where is My Mind’), the song is pretty decent, instantly catchy and different to the band’s usual stripped down New York art-rock sound. The robotic post-punk of its B side, ‘On My Mouth’, is less catchy, but hints at the diversity of the band, whose second album 'Awesomer' has just been released in Europe by Fat Cat. Generally their music is a mix of Velvet Underground coolness, new wave dance-ability and no wave noise, and well worth looking into.
