intro
Pleasing debut EP from Little Fish, the nom de plume for singer/songwriter Julia Sophie, which merges together her unusual vocal style with gentle acoustic guitarwork
Little Fish is the nom de plume for singer/songwriter Julia Sophie, and this debut EP showcases her unusual vocal style and gentle acoustic guitarwork. Sophie is a self-taught musician living in London and already she is set to work with Greg Haver, producer of the Manic Street Preachers and Catatonia. She struggled through a debilitating throat condition and is lucky to still be able to sing. Her voice is a lovely mix of soft notes and gravelly warmth. ‘Thirst’ best captures her vocal abilities, and, finding her accompanied only by an acoustic guitar, is definitely her most memorable song. ‘Revolution’, the opening song, does not quite capture the talents of Little Fish and feels a little formulated. With a drum beat alongside the acoustic guitar this is the most energetic song of the EP, but Sophie does not quite pull this off as well as the quieter more intimate final songs. ‘Clock Face’ does not immediately strike a chord but ‘Ashes’ is again stripped down to just a voice and guitar. It is a dark yet very pretty song that is up to the standards of closer ‘Thirst’. Overall this is a pleasing debut that promises much from Little Fish.
