intro
Excellent third album of storytelling narratives from acclaimed folk singer Damien Dempsey, who is immensely popular in his native Ireland
The Irish landscape has a habit of producing talented singers and poets. Why else would it be the considered the land of saints and scholars ? Irish folk singer Damien Dempsey is probably one of its best and very not well kept secrets. The guy is bigger than Jesus over there. Each song on his new album, 'Shots', seems more a story of plight than just a mere song. It’s not easy listening as the album is accompanied by a glossary of what the songs are about. Opening track 'Sing All Our Cares Away' is a story of how poverty and adversity can be over come by the power of optimism. 'St Patrick’s Day' is the story of the mass immigration of the Irish in the 19th and 20th century. 'Track Patience' vitriolically berates the music industries exploitation of artists, referring to manufactured music as an "oral lobotomy for those who choose it." Damien Dempsey is an amazing lyricist in the vein of Christy Moore.
