intro
Excellent compilation from the Fat Possum label, which including tracks by the Black Keys, RL Burnside and Bob Log III and an unreleased cover by Iggy and the Stooges, more than than lives up to its title
It seems the people at the Fat Possum label can do little wrong at the moment. As well as bringing us the awesome Black Keys they’ve been busy putting out full top-notch material from the maniac genius R.L. Burnside and various other blues enthusiasts. And now they’ve put out a compilation of some of the best bits. Compilation albums are two a penny at Christmas and the vast majority are dross. So it comes as something of a relief to say that this album is bloody brilliant. From the opening classic old-school blues of ‘Hadn’t I Been Good To You’ by the late Charles Caldwell to the modern take of the Black Keys’s ‘Set You Free’ to motorcycle helmet wearing loon Bob Log III’s ‘Boob Scotch’. Although this is not the same old blues crap it manages to range across the genre in an impressive fashion. The likes of Grandpa Boy and Thee Shams turn in some rockin’ riffs, while Jimmy Lee Williams and Robert Pete Williams are traditional pared down musicians. All are great. There’s even a brand new Iggy and the Stooges track in the shape of a cover of Junior Kimbrough’s ‘You Better Run’. There’s nothing you could pick out here as a bad track. A compilation totally free of dross is a remarkable achievement. This should make a perfect Christmas present for anyone with any musical taste.
