intro
Long awaited and spirited full length debut album from Portland, Oregon's Silver Surfer, released to coincide with their UK tour in January at which they played a date at the Pennyblackmusic Bands Night
'If This Is Out There' is the long awaited first full length album by the Oregon based band Silver Surfer. The 4 piece band have previously released various EPs on their own record label Tyranosaurus Records. This time the album has come out on Nexus Underground. The album release has coincided with the band’s first UK tour in January. 'Change Your Mind', the first song, sounds as if it is coming from far distance and running to meet you. The keyboards played by Doug Quast give the song an appealing texture. One of the most talked about songs on the album is 'Sgt. Pepper vs. Endless Summer'. As Ryan Carroll, the singer and guitarist, revealed it was inspired by the conflict that existed between the Beatles and the Beach Boys in 1967 when they were both trying to get out their own particular music projects. "I wrote a letter to Sgt. Pepper /Said how you get there to end the Summer." Ryan sings. The music builds up along the way, but it later steps back to give the vocals attention. The soft tune of 'Chinese Kites' rocks peacefully, while 'Clear As Stratosphere' in contrast kicks out with great energy. Frantic guitars blur in the background, before almost swallowing Ryan's honest voice. Towards the end of this 11 track album the music slows down. When you hit track 9, 'Honey All Over You', it's the time to just sit down and let the music drift around you. 'To The Next Light Star' is the last song, and has a gracefully flowing warm sound. You just feel like closing your eyes and get lost in your thoughts drifting away from the whole world. Silver Surfer have been around since 1997. Every single one of their releases has faithfully helped to develop their natural character. 'If This Is Out There' is no exception. All 11 tracks seem together to create one original spirit. A Spirit that burns with positive attitude and honesty.
