intro

Eclectic debut EP from promising new South London indie guitar band

There are always young bands around trying to attract the attention of fans and record labels. The London based band the Capes were until recently one of them, until they attracted the notice of Outafocus Records (which has already released records by Freeheat, which features ex-Jesus and Mary Chain members, Jim Reid and Ben Lurie, and Medium 21 who are nowadays signed to the major label Temptation Records.) 'I Write The Wrongs', a four track EP, is the Capes' first release, and came out on Outafocus at the very end of 2002. 'I Write The Wrongs', the first song, is inspiring with its edgy guitar and cathartic drum beats. "What have I got/ Just a broken marriage and a carriage clock" Chris, the vocalist, explains. The music self-consciously flows along. Backing vocals soften the edgy sound, but only just enough to give the song from time to time a different texture. The second track, 'Chromelss', may surprise you at first with the echoing organ that appears at its very beginning. Guitars and keyboards then slip in. Laidback vocals come later. Backing vocals also add further to the song's stylish sound. 'Boy In A Hood' is mostly based around keyboards, which are pulled into a high-pitched tune. Chris' voice is slightly subdued at first, but, as as the song proceeds, is brought above the surface occasionally. Let's get loud with the last song 'Firstbase'. All the instruments spin together in a rebellious style. Chris's vocals are excitable and breathless in tone. At the end, the music reshapes itself with a raw sound. It seems to be coming from some distance, but is not lacking in volume. All of a sudden you hear the sound of a horse racing alongm and almost before you realize it 'I Write The Wrongs' is over. The Capes only formed in 2001. Their early gigs have a powerful sparkle about them. A sparkle of potential which may ignite into a great fire when the time is right. They are definitely a name worth watching out for.
