intro
Debut release on their own Ronda label from Can-influenced parisian post-rock duo, Melmac
Melmac is a Parisian post-rock duo, which consists of two brothers, Luc Reverter (casiotron, mpc 2000 and minidisc) and Nicolas Reverter (guitar, tapes, music clavier and minidisc). Since forming in mid 1998, it has released EPs and compilation tracks on a variety of labels including hinah, Perversion Mecanique, See-Through Records and POPnews. 'Game_02' is Melmac's debut release on its own Ronda label, and, appearing in four different black and white sleeves, is limited overall to just 100 copies. The Reverters use both traditional and improvisational methods to record their music. Falling into the latter category, and recorded in May, 'Game_02' is largely instrumental, and lasting 36 minutes, opens and closes with the same shimmering, fuzzy riff from Luc's casiotron. In between, the Reverters have added lots of shuffling industrial white sound ; dialogues from French films and game shows ; a sample of a commentary in English about one of the Moon landings, and some Clanger-style noises. Eerily reminiscent of Can, 'Game On' is perfect music for the 21st century, seemingly implying that, despite all our new found technology, and increased ability to communicate with each other, all of us are essentially alone. Starkly, disturbingly beautiful and haunting, it is a compulsive and compelling experience. Ronda has got off to good start with this small release. Wth solo releases by both Luc and Nicolas, and also their first full-length album together planned for next year, both it and Melmac are a most exciting option.
