intro

Finely arranged West coast hiphop, with elements of jazz and soul ,from Berkeley School of music graduate, Peven Everett

Peven Everett left Berkeley School of Music to go on tour for six years, and through this developed an interest in jazz and soul music to become a craftsman of free floating West coast hiphop. In 1998 he gave his own Studio Confessions Records its first shot, but went on to ABB Records to release his debut using the same name. Preceded by the underground hit 'Testin' Me', the 10 track album is a smooth and smothering affair. It, however, towards the close loses itself in a 70's jazz ooze that brought back memories of George Benson who I didn't like back then. Perhaps I'm recommending Peven Everett without reealising it. The few tougher cuts towards the beginning are the ones that I prefer, but my favourite track is 'They're So Cold', which captures the tragedy of jazz in love life. It is perfect melancholy in one of the finest arrangements around.
