Mixed debut offering from already highly acclaimed new Welsh group
‘Mayfair/Still’ is the debut single by the Cardiff rock group, Watershed. The four piece group has been predicted to have a great future, and have already been receiving airplay on the John Peel and Steve Lamacq shows ‘Mayfair’ begins with an unobtrusively calm drumbeat. Guitars join in then and Ben James then adds his spirited vocals. The song sounds like it has been heard in a dream. It seems to be coming from a far distance, but at the same time is crystal clear. Once you try catching it, however, it blurs away untouched. The second track, ‘Still’, has a much harder sound. The vocals appear first, but its very rough sound does not quite gel with the previous song, and is only slightly softened by the music having a mild electronic feel. The vocals are again rather dreamy, but dominate majestically over, and demand more attention than the music which, I believe,is a shame. The group has been gathering together more material and hope to follow this with an album in the very near future. The record is, like' 'Mayfair/Still, is also very likely to appear on the Boobytrap label.
