Based on the number of releases he's had in the last year, Tom Jenkinson (aka 'Squarepusher') must be an insomniac. Either that or he is actually able to work at the same frenetic pace that most of his tracks have and while he delved heavily into a free-jazz sound on a number of his more recent releases and dropped the BPMs down to a safe freeway driving speed, those frenetic beats once again take center stage on 'Selection 16'. Think "Big Loada" era Squarepusher and you've got a good idea where this one is coming from - not quite seizure inducing like some of his earliest releases, but not for the rhythmically challenged either. Layers of fast paced beats and electronic noises riding on top of synth tones and more beats backed-up by some deep bass tones and even more beats! Having said that, don't fear, there are some mellow, almost down-tempo tracks here and some short free-jazz freak-outs and interludes too that give you a chance to catch your breath, if only for a moment, before the pace picks up again. I especially liked the track "mind rubbers" for both the sound of the track and the images the title brough to my head. Listening to this album, I couldn't help but feel as if Iwas trapped in a video game - and it's not Tron...it's more like Berserk.
