intro
Magnificent second album from St Petersburg-based shoegazing act, Pinkshinyultrablast
St. Petersburg shoegazing band Pinkshinyultrablast have toured the UK twice in the two years since they released their first album 'Everything Else Matters', gradually building up a loyal and growing fan base. For their second album 'Grandfeathered' they remain on Club AC30, and release it yet again in the early Spring. 'Everything Else Matters' sold out on vinyl very quickly, and soon saw four different pressings getting the coloured vinyl treatment. 'Grandfeathered' comes out in three colours, and pretty much captures their live feel. 'Initial' kicks opens the album, starting off sounding like 'Hong Kong Garden' by Siouxsie and the Banshees before becoming more electro, while singer Lyubov's vocals are fizzy and poppy. 'Glow Vastly' is almost metal-flavoured, but Lyubov's vocal keeps it in the boundaries of dream pop. 'I Catch You Napping' shows off the heavy side of the band, and is loud, trippy, and even dreamier still. It is a song to lose yourself in, totally unique, and not just a reinvention of the past. 'Kiddy Pool Dreams' was a recent single and sold out on pre-orders in ten inch splattered coloured vinyl single. It has a haunting sound, but is harder-edged with the guitars turned up and Lyubov's vocals dancing with joy. 'Comet Marbles' sounds like a harder-edged Slowdive, while the vocals recall those of Elizabeth Fraser. 'The Cherry Pit' is awash in feedback and catchy guitar licks. The band have an acquired taste that shadows the sound of the alt. movement of the late 80s, but givies it a kick up the backside, turning the volume up and making the colours brighter. 'Molkky' is very fast, full of its own charms, and with a much bigger sound. 'Grandfeathered', the title track which ends the album, is much a softer affair, but showing again the band's uniqueness. A wonder of delight, and an album to blow away the coldness of early Spring.
