‘Kind’, released through Parlophone Records - nearly two years after their previous album ‘Scream Above the Sounds’ - is the eleventh studio album by Welsh rock band Stereophonics. Consistently successful since 1997, Stereophonics have achieved six No. 1 albums, 23 Platinum Sales Awards and five BRIT nominations with one BRIT Award win.
This new album was recorded in only eleven days at the Distillery studio in Wiltshire. A co-production between Kelly Jones and George Drakoulias (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Primal Scream, Screaming Trees), ‘Kind’ presents a stripped-back, raw approach with minimal instrumentation, complemented by Jones’s emotive, trademark vocals.
Several styles characterise this album including country in ‘Street of Orange Light’ and ‘Stitches’, then there’s the pacey, rocky starter ‘I Just Wanted the Goods’ and the final folksy, Dylanesque track ‘Restless Mind.’ The new single ‘Bust This Town’ is about living for the moment, going with your instinct and never looking back, in Jones’s words "two lovers, or friends… finally find the courage to leave the small town they are stuck in and head on down the road, breaking all the rules along the way."
‘Fly Like an Eagle’ is an optimistic lyrical ode with its message of striving to better yourself: "Wanna fly like an eagle/And dare to be reborn." The blues-guitar-led ’Don’t Let The Devil Take Another Day’ revolves around the tension between needing to escape and the ability to live in the moment. By complete contrast, ‘Make Friends with the Morning’ is an uplifting gospel hymn.
This latest venture is an honest collection that will help cement Stereophonics’ continuing place as one of the UK’s most successful bands.
