The duo's third album is much more of a slick and lean affair than the sketchy fun of their 2010 album '936'. Still lo-fi dub pop though, 'Lucifer' is like the soundtrack to a dreamworld. Joe Jackson was wrong that happy loving couples are boring. Beginning with 'Moonrise' and ending with 'Morning Star', 'Lucifer' sheds some light on the night.
A funny cocktail of valium and viagra perhaps, there's erotic elegance here. If even 'Dream Beat' fails to rock your boat, then you can say with conviction that you have lost your hips. File under Advanced Mating Rituals.
From the eccentric '936' to the exotic world of 'Lucifer' is natural progress. The feel is that of the early 1980s, pace slowed down. It is the West Coast remember. The eerie sophistication of firm and sober yet cosmic dub pop music works very well.
