Even though this is Boston based Pants Yell!’s fourth album, I haven’t really bothered to check them out earlier, which is a shame. How could I have resisted their previous album, entitled 'Alison Statton', which was named after the fabulous Young Marble Giants singer(Well, she was in Weekend too, but they weren’t as good)? Anyway, their fourth album is also their first for the classic indiepop label Slumberland, and, judging from the sound on this record, they really do belong there.
The opening track, 'Frank and Sandy', is one of the few slower tracks on the CD, and it’s quite obvious that the band should be concentrating on their faster songs. Luckily, for me, they do that, too. As always, I’m trying to think of some other bands to refer to, and the first ones that pops into my mind is the gorgeous Go Sailor (if you don’t have their compilation CD, you should try to find it… now!), the Push Kings and the Go-Betweens, the latter being mentioned on the press release from the label together with Belle & Sebastian (which is a comparison that I really can’t agree with).
This is a really good album, and it would probably have made it to my top 10 list of 2009 if I had made one. Oh, how I love to discover a “new” band!
