'Wine, Women and Song' starts out with a heavy-duty crunch-a-thon buttressed by the drumming of Melvins’ thumper Dale Crover. 'Succulento' is 12 minutes long, but it’s not even the longest tune on the album. That is the multi-part 'The Five Books of the Aenas.' Even with some cool sounds -- having stoner-rock producer Billy Anderson as your bassist is no doubt a big help in this department – it’s a bit of a mouthful.
The three minutes,17 seconds of 'Mastodon Entrée' is a much more tasty morsel, although the vocals of guitarist Tim Moss are really only serviceable.
The sad truth is that 'Wine, Women and Song' doesn’t live up to the promise of its participants; extra songcraft is needed to fill out the mighty rhythm and ace production.
