The Last Days of April, the country and western combo built around Karl Larsson, have already released nine albums. 'Sea Of Clouds' dwells in many clichés, but its fine harmony vocals, ringing guitar chords and slick steel guitar hooks are ll perfectly crafted. There is a chicken skin moment on 'The Thunder and the Storm' in its last two-and-a-half minutes. The lyrics, while simple in tone,, deal with eternal truths: 'Everybody Knows', 'Oh Well', 'The Way Things Were' - a snappy radio-friendly two minute song - and 'Someone for Everyone' are typical song titles. The rich orchestration of the title track brings a welcome change.
'Sea Of Clouds' aims for epic proportions. 'Someone For Everyone', the opening track on the second side of the LP version, sets off in the same rocking style as all of the tracks on side one, but then the album slows down with more fragile arrangements. While hardly original, 'Sea of Clouds' is a pleasant experience. With the LP, you get the CD for free. Tack.
