‘Thrive’ is the Bunny Gang’s sophomore full-length album, and has been described as “transcending and crossing musical boundaries” The band's name comes from a punk rock melee Nathan Maxwell, who is also the bassist in Flogging Molly, grew up with in the South Bay of Los Angeles called ‘The Original Bunny Gang’ or ‘OBG PUNX’. He played alongside various great musicians, including his father and his first bandmate Mike Peralta. In 2012 he met the like-minded Nat Lort-Nelson. In his own words, "he was the glue. There’s a deep history, and we share a philosophical outlook. We believe art should say something."
The follow-up to 2009′s acclaimed debut album ‘White Rabbit’, ‘Thrive’ mixes together alternative rock, folk, punk, and reggae, and was recorded at Sonic Ranch Studios in El Paso, Texas with producer Ryan Hewitt of Sheryl Crow and the Avett Brothers fame.
The first single, ‘Sirens through City’, was co-written with Scott Abels who has worked with Jimmy Cliff, the Aggrolites and Tim Armstrong and is a melodic indie affair containing a personal lyric from Maxwell.
Other noteworthy songs on here are the upbeat ‘Uprise Underground’ which no doubt will appeal to the revolutionaries amongst us. ‘Illegal Market’ is an easy drift through the landscape of their much loved Cumbria and is a beckoning for social equality. ‘Uprise Underground’ had me thinking of early U2 with its guitar riffs and anthemic sound. A reggae content is ever present throughout, and ‘Pave the Way’ is no exception. For me the highlight is the penultimate track ‘Running’, a slow, soulful ballad with a great guitar solo in it. The album is finished with ‘Canoe Dub’, a track that reminded me of Damon Albarn during his Gorillaz period.
‘Thrive’ is an exceptionally listenable and movable from the hips down record that should get the Bunny Gang noticed a lot more around the warren.
