Frenzied NYC band Landlady's debut has differing results, but always, however, at acceptable levels. This catchy potpourri is sometimes too clever for its own good. Yet when Adam Schtz sings, rather than acts a joker, his affectionate voice suits and smoothes the odd and sudden twists. Though not exactly an art rock act, Landlady combine complex structures with poppy harmony vocals. With a certain element of cabaret, the album has an uplifting feeling and the mixture of much varying fragments sounds occasionally funny.
Witty or ironic, the lyrics are rather straightforward which makes a next great antidote for the zany yet crafted songs. Attention deficit music from the start, the album eases down a little and structure enters Landlady's euphoria. The quintet goes full steam ahead on the epic last track 'X-Ray Machine' as the hammering indie rock comes to a thunderous close. B+.
