I have to say I am excited about the music coming out of the Southern hemisphere at the moment.
Kerretta formed in mid-2005 and features H.Walker from Avotor, William Waters from Meterman and also David Holmes, who has produced records for bands such as An Emerald City.
‘Pirohia’ sees the band not just carrying on in the same excellent vein but stepping up a gear and using their many strengths to give us another winner. Whilst the album itself might demonstrate some rather typical post-rock elements from time to time, the whole album seems to come across as one big, impressive experience, showcasing the genre at its best.
The band’s first single, ‘Death in the Future’, became the second most-played track on New Zealand college radio in 2008. After sharing stages with Explosions in the Sky, Mono, the Breeders and And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, they released the ‘Antient’ EP on 12" vinyl. Their much applauded debut LP ‘Vilayer’ was released in 2009, and received a nomination for the 2010 Taite Music Prize which is the New Zealand equivalent of the UK’s Mercury Awards for song-writing. In 2011, Kerretta released their second album entitled "Saansilo" on gatefold vinyl,,through Golden Antenna Records, who are responsible for releasing a whole host of thrilling music from this part of the world. They subsequently hit the road and toured every nook and cranny in Europe.
I am not a total lover of the instrumental album, but this album is a monster. It is compelling how Kerretta have managed to present their own style of post-rock music, rather than just following in the footsteps or imitating the many post-rock bands out there today. Hidden inside this nicely packaged CD, you will find some serious craftsmanship in the songs. A lot of intensive thought has gone into the workings of the songs themselves, which build up and slow down and go down to the serene and then lash out at you again. It is an absolutely gripping and haunting experience.
