The Long Lost Band, which consists of Stuart Anthony , Matt Appleton, Greg Maddox and Oscar Armer, hail from Lancaster. They are long-term loyal support artists to Ian McNabb when he plays that part of the country, which makes sense as they make similarly mature and thoughtful adult rock.
'Death of the Album’ last 72 minutes and opens with ‘To Be Honest’, which is jangly in sound, while Stu's vocals have enough attitude to convince you to listen harder to what is being said. The melodies on this track, as with much of the album, remind me of those 1980’s bands who were influenced by 1960’s bands, which for me is always a good sign.
‘Stop Me Feeling Low’ tells a good story which hints darkly at the past, but does so in a refreshing retro way that will perk up any dark given day. ‘Trick of the Light’ has an element of 1970’s funk to it, and enough energy in its heavy rhythms to make you spill your pint over the already sticky floor.
‘Easy Sky’ has a solid beat to it and 1990’s rocking overtones, while ‘Left You Like Judas’ is an anthemic and summer number, vaguely reminiscent of U2. ‘Honey and Warmth’ swings along like Tim Buckley in approximately 1967 fronting his tribute 1990’s band Starsailor.
‘Across the Guns’ sails along like a decent Oasis track, while ‘Legacy’ is elegant in the style of Kris Kristofferson and also has an element of Lee Hazlewood and Robert Wyatt to it. The swaggering ‘Later Than Sooner’ again is reminiscent of Tim Buckley, while ‘Who Can Deny Love' feels like a middle-of-the-road classic, the sort of thing that BBC4 spends most of their Friday Nights’ making documentaries about.
‘Heavier’ has mellow vocals and catchy guitars while its backing holds it all together. ‘Left You Lke Judas’ reappears briefly as an acoustic reprise, while ‘Hit and Miss’ is fast and groovy and shines like a good Britpop number.
‘A Walk in the Park’ captures the mood of Jethro Tull for the new century, while Cyclone, which ends the album, is first-rate Neil Young–style Americana.
‘Death of the Album’ is a fantastic album.
