Daedalus’ Right Eye’s eponymous five song debut EP promises a lot. It is beautifully presented, appearing in a lavishly packaged three-tier fold-out sleeve, and has been produced by Romesh Dodangoda, who has worked in the past with Motorhead, Kids in Glass Houses and Funeral For a Friend. The young Bath-based four-piece’s lyrics meanwhile intriguingly tell of the life and loves of Beatrix Rowe, an imaginary character in Valentine Place, a morally bankrupt Victorian western town.
Unfortunately, however, Daedalus’ Right Eye, who come from the softer side of heavy rock, do not really deliver. The EP is well enough performed, but somewhat anonymous in sound. Singer Laine Pearce-Rees’ vocals are solid enough, yet similarly unremarkable. What we end up with is a bland, largely unmemorable series of guitar riffs, while its lyrics also do not live up to expectations, seemingly focusing on a narcissistic, but drab love affair.
Only the final track, ‘Mr McKeif’, which owes a debt to the Gaslight Anthem with its punch-the-sky chorus, offers more. There is a brief magical moment at the three minute mark in which the music unexpectedly drops away, and then slowly rises again as Pearce-Rees’ vocals starting as a whisper also escalate upwards in perfect time. It is, however, a long way to go for a pay-off.
Overall this EP is a disappointment.
