Puritan San Francisco skanksters Extra Classic have aimed with ‘Your Light Like White Lightning, Your Light Like a Laser Beam’ for a perfect reincarnation of 1970's Jamaican ska reggae, yet their West Coast background shows in their whoohoo harmony vocals and twangy slide guitar slicks. Their dubby riddims do, however, somewhat remind one of King Tubby and perhaps Coxsone Dodd. Prevalent though is Extra Classic's love of harmonic vocals and melody, and on 'Angel Eyes' this lingering loveliness comes to the surface.
Rather than regard the album as an attempt at, fake, reggae, this album rejoices in vocals vaguely up there with the Wilson brothers. And since reggae is insular music pur sang, the roll on roll off waves of riddims from the shores and beaches build up the perfect background for half of this album, whilst the other half sticks to its San Francisco pop roots. 'Your Light Like White Lightning, Your Light Like a Laser Beam' very much is a trick of styles and one you'll simply enjoy.
Emotive, and done with so much dedication and devotion to old reggae, this album may even appeal to those who enjoy the music of the mid 1970s from acts such as Big Star and Dwight Twilley. In a sense this album has just as little to do with reggae as did 10CC's 'Dreadlock Holiday' whilst at the same it has worked out very well.
