I don’t mean to fickle, fly by night, or gun-jump, but as I was working on this review I was also sifting through piles of CDs and trying to compile my top 10 albums of 2011. I now have number 10.
Full of raw energy, the Bristolians do not hold back at any point at all and this is what I really dig about them. Somehow fusing the furious hardcore of the likes of Cancer Bats and Trash Talk with a little bit of classic rock swagger, without sounding stupid, cheesy or contrivedat any point, this is the sort of heavy music that is full on, yet totally fun. Think the likes of The Bronx and more notably Pulled Apart ny Horses. ‘The Big Cut’ even verges on sounding like Turbonegro, but without being quite as pantomime. They certainly have the sound of a band that have absolutely bags of charisma. This album is filled on tracks like 'Seven Severed Heads' and 'Read and Write' full of riffs that other bands would be scared to use.
I would hazard a guess that live they sound like the sort of band that would absolutely tear any venue that dare have them to pieces. ‘Son (sun)’ throws a completely funky twist into the album and has a real classic Chili Peppers feel to it, only much heavier.
Lead single ‘A Rose for the Crows’ is beginning to get some spins on Radio One. The main riff could quite easily tear a man's face from his head. The fact that it is getting some decent radio play just makes me grin like an idiot. For so many years the only ‘heavy’ guitar music that managed to get through on the main stream was either far too safe or began to feel like a bit of a parody of itself. It is totally refreshing to hear bands like Turbowolf breaking through. Above all singer Chris Georgiadis has a fucking great moustache.
