I have seen mentions of this band and I was put off by the band name. Using a famous name never went down well in my book, and I thought they'd be yet another bunch of hopeless, attention-seeking indie rockers. Fret not, they absolutely are great fun. 'Be Ready' renders zany jukebox merriness. Capable of almost any genre, they play folky surf, science fiction TV signature tunes and a fancy brew of, oh, pretty much anything non-electronic with the same ease. Not shy either of a rocking twang, sixties garage trash, loud psychobilly or slow grinding blues music, Dennis Hopper Choppers found an impressive balance. By the way, a name change to Dennis Chopper Hoppers is what I would recommend to them. It's like in 'Easy Rider', all the way from Memphis via New Orleans to Nashville in style.
Psychedelic waltzes, torero trumpets, dubby eerie organ riffs et al may even wake Lux Interior from his grave with one tremendous blast off this album. The tearing sound of a saxophone on 'Number 1' builds the grand finale to a thoroughly enjoyable bonanza. 'Be Ready' is one of the few albums which I am certain that John Peel would have liked. Dennis Chopper Hoppers lack a conservative attitude and they do know how to write an excellent tune. Fabulously inventive memorabilia for the price of one album, Santa came to town extremely early this year!
