My Spanish isn’t that great, so listening to South America’s most loved garage punk band Los Peyotes was an overall challenging affair when it came to trying to think of things to write about when discussing lyrics.
I can tell you that the title track from the album ‘Garaje O Muerte’ means garage or death, or something to that effect. It kicks things off perfectly, setting you up for a great blend of punk and garage with plenty of twists that really make them stand out from the crowd, even if you don’t really know what they’re singing about.
Lucky for the ignorant uno language types like myself, there are a few tracks on this disc that are in English. But who really cares anyway? It’s all about the vibe with this sort of band and they don’t make a difficult job of getting that across, language barrier or not. On this album the five piece, who hail from Peru and Argentina respectively take a trip back to the swinging 60’s with plenty of organs and psychedelic noise on here.
‘La Cicatriz’ is the first really 60’s sounding tune and throws in a subtle hint of the Kinks for good measure. ‘Pinatol’ has a real South American flavour to it, above the obvious and this is where Los Peyotes shine for me. They show a real flair for putting a Latino twist on the garage rock we’re used to. ‘Clavame en la Cruz’ is a fantastic punk number which is a lot more raw than athe other tunes on the album and I would imagine would go down with sweat, beer and tequila amazingly well in the live setting.
‘Peyoteando Con Ayahuasca'is a really great slab of South American music, throwing all the rhythms you’d normally associate with Latin music and adding the odd crow sound and vocal in there. ’96 Lagrimas’ would sit perfectly in any Austin Powers film if it so desired and carries on the subtly eclectic feel of ‘Garaje O Muerte’.
This is a great party album of immense character. The final tune ‘Fuera de Mi Cajon’ sums the whole album up so well and finishes the album on a proper high note, leaving you checking the listings and cheap flights to South America.
