The former member of the Prodigy launched his Electric Tastebuds label over a year ago, but 'Tasty' is not a cross-selection from its catalogue so far. Included are all the artists though, including the notorious breakbeat bouncers Wrongstars and Smash HiFi. The Prodigy never did much for me as I am some sort of a Lee Perry puritan, not pleased at how the Prodigy used a sample of his, but 'Tasty' shows how Leeroy Thornhill has moved on and progressed.
Under his own name, Thornhill includes the rocking 'Headgrind' plus '1 Man Army' which features dextrous percussion for an otherwise pretty straight dance pop tune. With Joe Morena as Jagged Slap he causes bigger mayhem; 'Bubba Gump' has a bit of gabba bump whilst 'Jagged' leans towards darker electro-funk.
Together with Boogie Army's Martin Hörger Thornhill as Smash HiFi, Thornhill produces fat house and particularly on '15 Hundred Dollars' the beats roll by finely.
'Tasty' introduces two artists new to Electric Tastebuds. First Controlled Change provide 'Depression' and yes, it's topical with a nicely psychotic speech sample on the crisis, eerie synths and the breakbeat rhythms of Armageddon. Debuting as well is Kouncil House whose 'Hacker' sets off the alarm with a stonker electro sound beguiled by an innocent sound snippet. On 'Rock The Party' Kouncil House battle with Leeroy Thornhill resulting in very addictive, minimal electro beats and gremlin-like vocals.
'Tasty' closes off with a 601 remix of 'Spotlight' by The Wrongstars, an absolute floorfiller even when it's a tricky twister. I can imagine people heading for the floor, pausing for a while but being dragged in again by the magnetic force of 601.
If you really want to upset 'Strictly Come Dancing', hack the BBC and play this loud. Guaranteed fun!
