'Cut Me' is the new single from Kick to Kill, a pseudo-gothic outfit hailing from Glasgow.

The track started off interestingly enough, with some Primal Screamish hyper-tempo guitar riffing (think a more electro-oriented version of their 'When the Bomb Drops' track). I’ll also admit I was pretty intrigued by the first third of the song, even if some of it worst lyrical moments channelled some truly dreadful Club Kid partying philosophy.

Then everything flew off the rails.

All of a sudden it dawned on me. Any shelf life the song might have originally had expired abruptly, yet it nobly/stupidly still pressed on. The charming hook (“Cmon and cut me! Cmon and watch me bleed!”) began to endlessly repeat for a solid two minutes straight (without any real change in cadence or arrangement, mind you) and you know, some relentless jackhammer rhythms or repeating mantras are really quite awesome (Killing Joke’s 'Requiem' comes to mind, and that song very nearly bore a hole into my skull).

Such is not the case here. I just for the life of me, cannot figure out how anybody who isn’t some morbid meth rat, could actually dig the entirety of 'Cut Me'. You know guys, the whole self-mutilation to cover up emotional pain thing doesn’t really work when the song is clearly designed to make the cut for playlists in seedy Eurotrash beat-havens across your homeland. I’m not really sure what sort of world Kick to Kill think they are living in, but the one I inhabit, generally spits on this sort of chic sinister drivel masquerading as something much deeper and interesting.

It’s neither. Ah to hell with it, just buy Riot City Blues and be done with it.
